In some asanas, the thighs have a natural tendency to roll outward by virtue of the position they are in.   In these asanas, a deliberate effort is needed to keep the thighs centered by rolling them inward.   In other asanas, we need to roll the thighs deliberately outward because they have a tendency to roll inward.
